Imagine a fire pit eight feet in diameter in the middle of a cozy historic lodge. Take this lodge and put it in the middle of the Montana mountains, right on the shore of a lake with crystal blue waters. Creaky hallway floors but comfortable rooms with lush linens. There’s no cell service and no wifi. Steps away from world class hiking trails to mountain peaks, glaciers, and more crystal blue lakes.
This is Many Glacier Lodge. It’s summer vacation perfection and no surprise that rooms book over a year in advance. Technically, reservations begin on the first day of the month a year out. If you want to stay on August 20, 2020, you can make a reservation on August 1, 2019.
This past summer, we called August 9th for a reservation for August 5th and were out of luck. Rooms were gone. A few date changes and some flexibility (changing rooms every night), and we booked three rooms in the Many Glacier area (two at the Lodge and one down the street in the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn).
Given that Glacier National Park is so remote and far away from a significant urban area, staying at a lodge in the park is a good idea to get yourself close to the action. In the summer, days are long (early sunrises and late sunsets) so if you want good light for photography, it’s even more important to stay near the scenery.
The rooms are expensive. There’s no doubt, though, that this is a dream spot to stay for a National Park vacation. We hope you’re lucky enough to get a chance to stay here in your lifetime.
